Show your client what you want them to see because they don’t know what you can do, and they also don’t know what they want until you give it to them. It takes courage to do work for free, because, in the act, you’re displaying expectancy that this bit of effort will return. It takes more courage to do free work for yourself because the pressure is now on you to repay yourself through that time spent. When I do free work, I always do it with the hope that it will return 10x. It doesn’t always show up in my bank account but you can count the intangibles. I’m going on a bit about free work and I know it’s a divided topic among creatives - I swear, I didn’t set out to write about this but as I write, I feel tied into the topic at hand. Your current and prospective clients don’t know what they want until they see it. So make sure they see what they want in you.
“There is a problem trying to figure out what people want. If Henry Ford would have asked people on whether or not he should build a motor car, they’d probably tell him they needed a faster horse.” - John McNeece
